The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair

The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair by Joel Dicker is a massive book. It takes a lot of time to get through the 640 pages. But it’s time well spent.  It was originally written in French, won a whole wack of prizes, and has finally been translated for us Anglos. Dicker was born in 1985, which makes him not even 30 yet. Impressive I say. Marcus Goldman is suffering from writer’s block. His first novel was a huge success and catapulted him into stardom. As the deadline for his second looms large, he decides to visit his former teacher and mentor, Harry Quebert, one of America’s most respected writers, to see if he can help jump start his writing again. His plans are upended when Harry is suddenly implicated in the death of Nola Kellergan, who died 33 years ago, when her body is discovered buried on Harry’s property in Somerset, New Hampshire. Marcus feels obligated to clear Harry’s name while trying to deal with his publisher’s ultimatum – hand over the draft of your second book or return the $1,000,000 advance we gave you. So there are actually 2 stories going on in this book. Harry helping Marcus deal with writer’s block, and Marcus helping Harry deal with his murder charge. Dicker has written a really good book with almost 1,000,000 copies sold in France alone. Now it’s our turn to be treated to this young author – who I hope doesn’t suffer from writer’s block like Marcus and is well into writing his next novel.  This is a great read!
